Nightclub Owner Fined For Dance Floor Incident

December 5, 2001

Construction officials fined a New Jersey nightclub owner $3,000 for building code violations stemming from a collapsed dance floor which injured dozens of people. Thirty-five people were taken to the hospital and several more were treated for minor injuries when the floor, made of plywood and plexiglass, gave way and fell into a swimming pool below. Between 400 and 600 partygoers were at the nightclub at the time of the accident.

Witnesses said numerous people began dancing at once when the disc jockey played a popular song. The floor failed shortly thereafter. Several people sustained head and neck injuries while others were knocked unconscious during the fall. A number of people suffered cuts, sprains and broken bones.

Officials also revoked the Metro Lounge's certificate of occupancy for the room that contained the pool. Criminal charges will not be sought.
