Officials at John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana, California have asked the Federal Aviation Administration to conduct an investigation into why Delta Airlines' MD-90 jets continue to experience tire blowouts upon landing at the airport. Since 1998, nine such blowouts have occurred.
Airport officials do not know whether the tire failures are due to "coincidence, the airport's tarmac, or the MD-90 aircraft." Aviation experts suspect that the airport's runway, one of the shortest in the nation, causes pilots to brake much sooner and harder than normal. Such aggressive braking can contribute to tire failure. A blowout can cause a loss of control and occasionally results in fire.
