High Cancer Rates at National Semiconductor Facility Worry Investigators

December 18, 2001

The British Health and Safety Executive, a governmental health care organization, revealed last week that employees at a semiconductor plant in Greenock, Scotland suffer from higher-than-normal rates of cancer. Researchers involved in the two-year study found high percentages of lung, stomach, and breast cancer among current and former female employees and high rates of brain cancer among male employees.

Researchers stress that the cancer rates are not necessarily due to chemical exposure at the National Semiconductor Corporation facility. Investigators say they will conduct another study within the year to verify the results.
