A Boeing 737 that suddenly banked to the right upon descent into Chicago-O'Hare International Airport on Thursday has investigators concerned. The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration reported that the pilot had to "stomp" on the left rudder pedal to regain control of the airplane. As a precaution, the flight crew told passengers to prepare for an emergency evacuation. The pilot was able to land the plane safely.
Aviation investigators were immediately dispatched to Chicago to analyze the aircraft's flight data recorder and to conduct tests on the rudder control system. Boeing 737s have a history of rudder control malfunctions, with fatal crashes in 1991 and 1994 attributed to the device.
