Army Doctor Lies to Conceal Medical Malpractice

December 27, 2001

A former Army doctor was found guilty last week of lying about the treatment of a teenage girl who died after routine surgery to remove a benign cyst. Captain Michael G. Hamner was dismissed from the service at a court-martial sentencing in Washington State.

Katie Tyra began to have heart and circulatory problems shortly after Hamner injected her with a powerful antibiotic. Katie, the daughter of a Marine colonel, died thirteen days later. Hamner told investigators that he knew he administered the antibiotic the "wrong way" but lied to doctors at the Walter Reed Medical Center after the death because he feared malpractice charges. Katie's parents will file a civil lawsuit against the hospital.
