Man Tries to Bring Down Jet with Explosives in Shoe

December 28, 2001

Last week the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) arrested an American Airlines passenger who apparently tried to ignite explosives in his shoe. Crewmembers and passengers subdued the man, flying under the name "Richard Reid," after an attendant noticed Reid lighting a fuse protruding from his shoe.

Upon x-ray of the shoe, authorities discovered a C-4 like substance and what appeared to be detonator wire. The suspect was interrogated upon arrival at Boston's Logan Airport. The 767 jetliner was traveling from Paris to Miami when it was diverted to Boston by F-15 fighter jets. The government reportedly issued a warning several weeks ago concerning hijackers concealing weapons in their shoes.
