In an effort to ensure the safety of America's food supply following the September 11th attacks, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has initiated a strict food safety oversight program. Under the new plan, applicants applying for positions at ports of entry for foodstuffs must go through an intense screening process. In addition, imported foods will be examined for suspicious substances and tampering. Finally, workers already employed at food storage facilities will be closely monitored and access to areas containing sensitive materials will be restricted.
Recently, the FDA and the office of Health and Human Services expressed concern over the limited number of food inspectors. Only 150 inspectors monitor the Nation's 132 ports of entry.
