The family of an elderly Texas woman who died from complications following the improper insertion of a suction tube, recently prevailed in a multi-million dollar lawsuit against the woman's nursing home. Rose Bonton lived at the Hill Country Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in January of 2000 when she was diagnosed with pneumonia. After a brief stay in a local hospital, she returned to Hill Country where she began to complain of breathing difficulties. A nurse placed a suction tube down Bonton's throat. Bonton subsequently choked on the tube and died.
The family filed suit against the nurses involved in the episode as well as the nursing home itself. Attorneys for the family argued that the nurse forced the tube down Bonton's throat and that other staff members failed to react in a timely manner. The jury awarded $21.5 million in damages to Bonton's family.
