Suicidal Tampa Pilot May Have Taken Accutane

January 9, 2002

Charles Bishop, the 15-year-old St. Petersburg boy who took his life last weekend by flying a single-engine Cessna into a Tampa high rise, may have been using a high-powered acne medication linked to suicide and depression. While searching Bishop's home Tuesday, authorities found a prescription for Accutane, a drug used in the treatment of resistant nodular cystic, the most severe form of acne. Investigators, currently awaiting results from toxicology tests, do not know for sure if Bishop was taking the medication.

Over 147 Accutane users committed suicide between 1982 and 2000. The drug's maker, Roche Laboratories, insists that the medication is safe. However, last year a federal investigation was launched in order to determine whether Accutane use is associated with depression and suicide.
