Faulty Part on Chrysler Minivans

May 8, 2001

The National Highway Transportation Traffic Safety Administration is currently investigating DaimlerChrysler AG minivans after 164 complaints were registered in conjunction with a the faulty clockspring assembly. This assembly is responsible for providing electricity to the driver side airbag for deployment in the event of an accident.

The investigation will include over 2.8 million minivans, including the 1996-2000 models of the Dodge Caravan, Grand Caravan, Plymouth Voyager, and Chrysler Town & Country. Investigators are researching claims that although the air bag readiness indicator lamp will light, the horn and the cruise control do not work. The NHTSA will also determine if the air bags function properly or if any parts sold by the company are defective.

A spokesperson for DaimlerChrysler purports that at this time, there have been no recalls of any minivans made by the company. DaimlerChrysler has, however, sold replacement parts for the clockspring assembly on all four models.
