A new report published in this month's issue of Neurology revealed that patients who combine different types of serotonin-enhancing medications, such as antidepressants and migraine drugs, may place themselves at an increased risk of suffering an ischemic stroke. According to researchers involved in the study, three patients suffered strokes after taking a combination of serotonin-enhancing medications.
Serotonin can cause blood vessels to constrict, a condition which can lead to stroke. Over 50 million Americans either suffer from migraines or take serotonin-enhancing antidepressants. Doctors note that serotonin medications "work very well" and remain the best drugs available for the treatment of certain ailments.
