Jurors Selected in Florida Inmate Brutality Case

January 11, 2002

An exhaustive three-month jury selection process in a case involving four Florida State Prison guards ended today as six jurors, five men and one woman, were finally selected. The highly anticipated inmate brutality case concerns the alleged murder of prisoner Frank Valdes, 36, who was found dead in his solitary confinement cell in 1999. An autopsy revealed that Valdes, incarcerated at the state prison in Bradford County, suffered from several broken ribs. Numerous boot marks were also noticeable on his body. The prison guards accused of beating Valdes claim that his injuries were self-inflicted.

Attorneys were challenged to find jurors in this small Florida community where it is estimated that the entire population is somehow associated with the state prison system. The prison is Bradford County's largest employer. Over 3,000 potential jurors were questioned before six were seated.
