A jury recently awarded a California man $25.7 million from General Motors, the maker of his Chevy Blazer that buckled during an auto accident, leaving him paralyzed. The Chevy Blazer rolled several times, and despite using a seatbelt, the driver is now a paraplegic with only limited use of his right hand.
While the auto accident itself was the driver's fault (he fell asleep at the wheel), his severe injuries were caused by a faulty roof that General Motors installed on the Chevy Blazer. The roof was the weakest installed on any general motors model. The Plaintiff's attorney presented the jury with examples of 19 other auto accidents involving General Motor's Chevy Blazer and similar GM vehicles. In the 19 other accidents, six victims died, nine became quadriplegics, two were rendered paraplegics and two suffered brain damage.
