For years, doctors have warned pregnant women about the harmful effects smoking can have on unborn children. In a report printed in this month's British Medical Journal, researchers revealed that an offspring's diabetes may be directly related to the mother's smoking habits during pregnancy.
Researchers studied over 17,000 births and concluded that children whose mothers smoked during pregnancy were four times more likely to develop diabetes than children of non-smokers. Researchers say that exposure to cigarette smoke while in the womb may alter a baby's metabolism, thus leading to diabetes.
