The $3.75 billion fen-phen class-action settlement went unchallenged last week by the nearly 300,000 plaintiffs involved. Parties had until January 2, 2002 to petition the Supreme Court to review the settlement. As the deadline passed, no petitions were filed. Attorneys associated with the proceedings say that users of fen-phen, Pondimin, or Redux now have until August 2002 to file a claim.
American Home Products' problems began when its popular diet drugs Redux (dexfenfluramine) and Pondimin (fenfluramine) were shown to cause serious heart valve problems. The FDA recalled both Redux and Pondimin in 1997. As of last October, AHP had paid nearly $11 billion to injured fen-phen, Redux, and Pondimin claimants.
