A 24-foot Coast Guard boat and a 65-foot commercial vessel collided Saturday night off Palm Island near Miami Beach, Florida. Eleven people were injured, including two Coast Guard officers who were thrown from their Boston Whaler patrol boat upon impact. All injuries were reported to be minor. A 48-foot fishing boat was also damaged.
Coast Guard officials would not say why the vessels collided, only that the accident was under investigation. The officers were on a routine "homeland security" patrol.
