According to a recent study conducted by the United States Navy, pregnant women inoculated with the now coveted anthrax vaccine may bear children with birth defects. Military officials said that while the study was not conclusive, the vaccine "may be associated with a higher risk of birth defects." Navy researchers plan to complete their analysis by April.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is debating whether civilians should be immunized with the still experimental vaccine. Some military personnel, who are required to take the anthrax vaccine, have complained of adverse side effects. According to the military's own statistics, up to 50% of those vaccinated experience rash and pain at the site of the injection.
