Testimony continued last week in the trial of four Florida State Prison guards accused of murdering death row inmate Frank Valdes. Robert Krebs, an inmate librarian, told jurors Thursday that Valdes knew guards would try to stop him from exposing rampant inmate abuse inside the prison. According to Krebs, Valdes feared correction officers planned to kill him.
Several prisoners have testified that guards began beating inmates after five prisoners were transferred to the Florida State Prison from Hamilton Correctional Institution because of their involvement in a near-riot that caused a female guard to suffer a miscarriage. Krebs claims Valdes asked him days before his death to mail ten letters to several Florida newspapers detailing inmate abuse at the Florida State Prison. Defense attorneys argue Valdes' numerous fatal injuries were self-inflicted.
