Consolidated Edison (Con Ed), an energy company that supplies electricity, natural gas, and steam service to New York City, recently settled a lawsuit with two workers who were seriously injured when a company steam pipe exploded. At the time of the accident, Otair Scolari and Raul Goncalves were employees of Felix Industries, a subcontractor of Con Ed.
The plaintiffs claimed that Con Ed failed to properly seal a ruptured pipe under a Manhattan intersection. In addition, the complaint alleged that the company did not supply enough ladders or adequate lighting at the worksite. When the pipe exploded, Con Ed's omissions made it difficult to escape the scene. As a result, Scolari and Goncalves suffered severe burns and were homebound for six weeks following their release from a New York hospital. The men reportedly settled the lawsuit for a combined $1.8 million.
