The tanning bed is a savior for those who do not live in warmer climes. Beds provide quick and easy tans without the need to spend hours baking in the sun. But a new report published today in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute warns that tanning lamps may cause serious cell damage, potentially doubling the risk of skin cancer.
Researchers involved in the study told health officials that "sun lamp use increases the risk of basal cell and squamous cell skin cancers" by 1.5 to 2.5 times. Dermatologists have warned for years that daily visits to tanning parlors may actually be worse on one's skin than an occasional natural suntan.
The report, which examined nearly 900 skin cancer patients, found the risk was highest for those under the age of twenty. Doctors say more information needs to be distributed concerning the dangers of tanning beds.
