Goodyear Load Range E Tire Recall

February 11, 2002

The recent recall of Goodyear Load Range E tires has alarmed auto safety experts across the country. According to safety officials, the recall pact between the tire maker and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) will leave millions of Load Range E tires on the roads. The tires are linked to dozens of tread separation accidents that have resulted in at least eleven deaths.

NHTSA decided to drop its probe of the model after Goodyear voluntarily agreed to recall 200,000 tires from 15-passenger vans and ambulances. But critics say that over 20 million tires on light trucks, vans, and sport utility vehicles will go unrecalled. Goodyear officials say the safety problems with the tire model only lie with 15-passenger vans and ambulances and that a full recall is not necessary.
