The South Texas Blood and Tissue Center in San Antonio is under intense scrutiny from health officials this week after a man acquired human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) from donated blood given at the facility. David Autrey, 51, acquired the disease from a blood transfusion he received during an emergency heart bypass operation in the summer of 2000. Officials at the South Texas center are "devastated" by the news. According to blood bank officials, the chance of acquiring HIV from a contaminated blood donation is nearly one in 3 million transfusions. HIV tainted blood can pass a bank's detection process if the donor recently contracted the disease.
