The Federal government's effort to ensure the safety of America's mail has resulted in a harmful side effect. Postal workers exposed to irradiated mail at offices in the Washington, D.C area are becoming sick. Employees have complained of nosebleeds, respiratory problems, migraine headaches, nausea, and runny eyes according to postal officials.
Mail bound for Federal offices in the nation's capital is sanitized with radiation as a precaution against anthrax contamination. Investigators with the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Postal Service are currently investigating the possible negative effects of sanitized mail. Nearly ninety workers at the Gaithersburg, Maryland postal facility have reported illnesses linked to irradiated mail.
