England says MMR Vaccine OK to Use

February 14, 2002

Health officials who fear that the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine (MMR) may be linked to the development of autism received encouraging news from Great Britain this week. Researchers at London's Royal Free Hospital and University College Medical School examined nearly 500 autistic children born in England between 1979 and 1998 and discovered that the rate of autism did not differ in the years before and after the MMR vaccine was introduced.

The study, published by the British Medical Journal, suggests that health professionals continue to use the vaccine to immunize children. A spokesperson for the British government endorsed the vaccine, assuring citizens and apprehensive parents that it was "the best protection for our children against these dangerous diseases." Doctors fear a major outbreak of the three disorders will occur if the vaccine is discarded.
