DaimlerChrysler Corporation has announced the recall of 1.6 million Grand Cherokees. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has received over 700 complaints from Grand Cherokee owners who say the vehicles can suddenly shift into reverse and power uncontrollably backwards. The reports also indicate that the Grand Cherokee can lurch into reverse while idling and even while the engine is turned off. Chrysler will install a part in the floor shifter mechanism to prevent the problem from occurring.
359 crashes, 184 injuries, and five deaths are now being blamed on the problem that involves 1993-1998 Grand Cherokees. The recall could not have come at a worse time for the billion-dollar company as the government is taking a tough stance against automobile and tire makers in the wake of the Firestone scandal. Chrysler denies a defect exists, saying that they only acted to "resolve consumer complaints."
