Earlier this month, an Arizona Superior Court jury ordered a rental car company to pay $9.5 million to the family of a girl who died in a tragic car accident. Arecili Naranjo, 6, was killed when the Chevy Astro her family had rented abruptly veered into a median and flipped on a desert highway. The right front tire's tread had blown off.
APS Rent-a-Car Inc. failed to inform the family about a similar accident that had occurred only months earlier. During the previous accident, the Astro's right front tire lost its tread. The rental company replaced only the faulty tire and continued to rent the van. The tire was a Firestone F-570, a different model from the one recalled from Ford Explorers.
