Enbrel Linked to Lupus

February 22, 2002

A report published in this month's issue of The Lancet warns that Enbrel, also known as Etanercept, may be linked to the development of lupus in rheumatoid arthritis patients. According to researchers at Rush Medical College, four female patients at a Chicago hospital showed symptoms of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) after using Enbrel for a short period. Patients suffered from several ailments including fever, a discoid lupus rash, fatigue, and hypertension. More than 85,000 people take Enbrel, which is made by Seattle-based pharmaceutical company, Immunex.
