Firefighters Win Reverse Discrimination Lawsuit

A Federal jury awarded ten white Chicago firefighters more than $2.2 million this week--damages from an October 2000 reverse discrimination lawsuit. The plaintiffs accused city officials of lowering their 1986 Fire Lieutenants Exam scores in order to increase promotions for Hispanic and African-American firefighters. Because the firefighters were passed over for advancement, presiding U.S. District Judge James Holderman must rule if they will receive pension readjustments and interest on sixteen years of back pay.
