EPA's Ombudsman Office Investigating Agency's Testing Procedures

February 26, 2002

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Ombudsman Office is investigating whether the EPA provided false information regarding the air quality above ground zero following the September 11 terrorist attacks. The office's chief investigator, Hugh Kaufman, claims the EPA tested the air quality above the World Trade Center improperly and then lied about the risks for residents and workers in the area.

Even though thousands of firefighters have complained of respiratory problems and scientists have discovered traces of lead, mercury, PCBs, asbestos, fiberglass and vanadium in the atmosphere, the EPA insists New Yorkers are safe. Kaufman believes a "cover-up" is taking place.
