Alcohol Industry Criticized in New Report

February 27, 2002

The alcoholic-beverage industry is receiving a vast amount of criticism from watchdogs who believe advertisements are designed to lure teenagers into buying liquor and beer. The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA), in a new report titled "Teen Tipplers: America's Underage Drinking Epidemic," claims that teens drink 25 percent of all alcohol consumed in the United States.

The study asserts that advertisements use images that are alluring to teens. CASA officials say over 30 percent of high school students binge drink (more than five drinks at one sitting), with just as many girls abusing the substances as boys. A spokesperson for one spirits-industry association said CASA's study was "flat out wrong." Critics of the report insist statistical errors exaggerated CASA's findings.
