Illinois Jury Awards Family $4.1 Million in Malpractice Case

March 1, 2002

An Illinois jury awarded the family of a Waukegan man $4.1 million this week in a medical malpractice case. Valentin Rodriguez, 75, was taken to Victory Memorial Hospital in March 1998 complaining of severe abdominal pain. The physician attending the emergency room, Dr. Richard Viglione, diagnosed Rodriguez as suffering from gastritis. Viglione failed to identify a severe abdominal aortic aneurysm.

After going into shock, Rodriguez was transferred to St. Luke's Medical Center in Milwaukee. He died one month later. Plaintiff's attorneys argued Viglione's malpractice contributed to Rodriguez's death.
