Polo Ralph Lauren Sued for Racial Discrimination

March 1, 2002

Polo Ralph Lauren, the fashionable apparel company that caters to wealthy clients, was accused of racial discrimination in a lawsuit filed this week by two ex-employees. Henry Williams, an African American, and Gerardeen Benedict, a Filipino, claim Polo awards less qualified white, blond haired employees better promotions and higher pay.

The suit comes in the wake of a two-year investigation conducted by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), which claims similar discriminatory practices exist at the billion-dollar company. The plaintiffs are seeking compensation for emotional anguish and back pay.
