A California jury awarded $6 million last week to a man who suffered major brain injuries after being hit by a truck while trying to escape two Rottweilers. The dogs were owned by the groundskeeper of the Rancho San Diego Golf Club. In 1998 Malaquias Avalos was jogging next to the course when the dogs gave chase. As Avalos stepped onto a bike path to avoid the animals, a truck's large side-view mirror struck his head. He now has no short-term memory and suffers from dementia.
Witnesses claimed the dogs consistently harassed golfers and joggers at the course. The dogs' owners failed to respond to several complaints concerning the animals' aggressive behavior. The jury found the owners of the golf course, the groundskeeper, Jesus Ruiz, and his son, Jose, negligent in the case.
