A Florida mother who claimed Ford Motor Company was responsible for injuries her child suffered in a car accident has reached a settlement with the automaker. Jamaal Walker's spine was crushed in 1996 after a driver ran a stop sign and collided with his mother's 1992 Aerostar. The six-year-old was left a quadriplegic. Palmella Rainford, Walker's mother, alleged a defective seatbelt caused her son's injuries.
According to Rainford, the van's seatbelts were inadequate for children too large for car seats but too small for standard seatbelts. Ford, which settled the suit during the trial, now offers special seats for children between the ages of four and eight. Ford continues to offer car accident settlements in the Ford Explorer, Firestone tire scandal.
