New York Hospitals to Re-Examine Transplant Procedures

March 21, 2002

New York health officials are insisting that all six state hospitals that perform liver transplants re-examine their donation procedures within the next thirty days. The demand comes just weeks after State Health Commissioner Antonia Novello suspended Mount Sinai Hospital's live-patient partial liver donations for six months following an investigation into the January death of Mike Hurewitz. Hurewitz died three days after donating part of his liver to his ailing brother. Inadequate staffing and improper post-surgical care were blamed for the patient's death. Mount Sinai was fined $48,000.
