According to a new report released today by a British researcher, serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as Prozac and Paxil may increase a patient's risk of developing brain cancer. Professor John Gordon of Birmingham University reported in the online edition of the medical journal Blood that the class of drugs encouraged the growth of a certain type of lymphoma in several test-tube experiments. Spokespersons for the drug manufactures vehemently denied the allegations, questioning the validity of Gordon's tests.
Paxil and other SSRIs have recently been linked to extreme acts of violent behavior in the United States.
