Less than a day after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a warning concerning the safety of 15-passenger vans, officials with consumer watchdog Public Citizen released a statement calling the alert ineffective. On Monday, the NHTSA reissued a cautionary warning to users of 15-passenger vans because of an increased rollover risk under certain conditions. A similar warning was issued in 2001. According to the new advisory, a trained, experienced driver should operate the van and occupants should wear seatbelts at all times.
Public Citizen, however, called the warning "useless". The group is asking the NHTSA to issue a revised advisory informing owners that the vans should carry less than five passengers. According to Public Citizen, auto manufacturers should also immediately redesign the 15-passenger van to make them safe.
