Two Die, Hundreds More Injured in Train Wreck Outside of Los Angeles

April 23, 2002

Two people died and approximately 265 others were injured this morning when a mile-long Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight train crashed into a Metrolink commuter train about 30 miles southeast of Los Angeles. Several passengers are now in critical condition at local Orange County hospitals. Over seventy-five commuters were sent to area trauma centers.

Eyewitnesses say the Metrolink train was stopped at an intersection when the freight train, traveling between 10 and 30 mph, slammed into it. The commuter train had just left the Corona station and was heading to the Anaheim Canyon station. The route serves over 3,000 passengers each day. Officials are currently investigating why the two trains were on the same track.

The accident is the second in five days involving a passenger train. On Thursday four people were killed and close to 160 others were injured when an Amtrak Auto Train derailed along a rural stretch of track in central Florida.
