Anonymous Tip Leads to $7.5 Million Medical Malpractice Settlement

April 25, 2002

An anonymous phone call recently led to one of the largest lump-sum settlements in a medical malpractice case in Massachusetts state history. In January 1997 at five weeks old, Leyda Uluan was admitted to Columbia Metro West Hospital in Framingham for a routine operation on her bellybutton. During the surgery, Uluan suffered severe blood loss along with fluid buildup in her lungs. While being transferred to Children's Hospital in Boston, the infant went into cardiac arrest. A physician from the hospital subsequently incorrectly intubated the child, which resulted in severe lung damage and lack of oxygen to her brain. She is now a spastic quadriplegic.

The parents of Uluan filed suit against the doctors and Columbia Metro after receiving an anonymous call from a woman claiming to be a nurse at the hospital. The unidentified caller told the parents that the physicians had mishandled the operation and made several mistakes in Uluan's treatment after the surgery. The family received $7.5 million in the settlement.
