An Ohio jury recently ordered Abbott Laboratories to pay $25.7 million to a 59-year-old sales representative who alleged the company forced him into retirement because of his age. David Jelinek was an employee for Abbott's Ross Products Division in Columbus for over three decades. In 1997, officials with the company, which sells nutritional supplements, told him he could either retire or transfer to another division in Indiana. Jelinek, earning close to $100,000 annually at that point, had been the division's top sales representative the year before. He claimed the sales district in Indiana had already collapsed and that his age was the central issue behind Abbott's demands. Abbott plans to appeal the decision.
