Amtrak Train Derails in South Carolina

May 14, 2002

An Amtrak passenger train carrying 137 people derailed this morning outside of Ridgeland, South Carolina. Ten rail cars went off the track when the train slammed into a log truck at a crossing. Jasper County investigators say there were no fatalities although fifteen passengers were reported injured, two seriously. The train left New York City's Penn Station Sunday night for Miami, Florida.

The accident was the second major derailment involving an Amtrak passenger train in less than one month. On April 18 four people were killed and close to 160 others were injured when an Amtrak Auto Train derailed along a rural stretch of track in central Florida.
