The family of a California woman who was shot to death by her estranged husband has settled a lawsuit that alleged the Sonoma County Sheriff's Department failed to properly enforce a restraining order against him. Maria Macias, 36, was fatally shot and her mother, Sara Hernandez, was wounded in the April 1996 attack. Avelino Macias killed himself shortly after the shooting.
The victim's family claimed sheriff officials failed to follow-up on several complaints filed by Macias in the days before the incident, which plaintiff attorneys argued was in direct violation of the restraining order's directive. Macias allegedly told the police nine times before her death that her husband was threatening and stalking her. The lawsuit settled Tuesday for $1 million.
