Mellaril Linked to Sudden Unexplained Deaths

June 28, 2002

According to a new report in this month's issue of the British Journal of Psychiatry, researchers have linked Mellaril, also known as Thioridazine Hydrochloride, to several unexplained deaths in England. Dr. Simon H. L. Thomas and colleagues from the University of Newcastle studied several cases of unexplained death among psychiatric in-patients, determining that Mellaril-induced torsades de pointes arrhythmia may be the cause. Physicians involved in the study warn that the drug's adverse reactions should be highly "considered in the context of the major benefits offered."
