A Colorado jury awarded $1.3 million last week to the family of a woman who fell victim to medical malpractice. On September 11, 2000, 54-year-old Be Luong died, just days after undergoing routine back surgery at the Medical Center of Aurora, Colo. Plaintiff attorneys argued that Luong's surgeon, Dr. Karl Stecher, accidentally cut a major blood vessel in her neck during the operation. Although the physician denied the allegations, the county coroner verified that a sharp device used by the defendant caused Luong's severe injuries.
