A Maryland jury recently awarded $1,050,000 to the family of a man who died after doctors failed to discover he was suffering from a pulmonary embolism. On December 21, 1999, Christian Welch, 76, underwent a hemicolectomy, a surgical removal of a portion of the colon, under general anesthesia. Ten days later, Welch was readmitted to Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore complaining of tachypnea, tachycardia and dyspnea (all symptoms of a post-surgical pulmonary embolism). Emergency room physicians failed to diagnose Welch with the disorder and released him from the hospital. He returned the next day complaining of similar symptoms but was again released without treatment. The following day, Welch suffocated to death, the result of a massive pulmonary embolism blocking his lungs.
