College Professor Denied Position Wins Racial and Gender Discrimination Lawsuit

A Michigan jury recently awarded $1.5 million to a white college professor who was the victim of racial and gender discrimination. In 1998, 1999 and 2000, administrators at Delta College in Michigan denied Stephen Buszek's application for a full-time teaching position. He had taught as an adjunct professor for six years before applying for the opening.
After being denied advancement, Buszek filed suit against the college, alleging that the 1998 position had been eliminated because of a lack of African-American applicants and that less qualified female professors had been offered the positions in 1999 and 2000. In the complaint, Buszek claimed emotional distress and economic loss.
