The chairman of the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee asked the Secretary of Health and Human Services yesterday to determine if the dietary supplement ephedra, used by athletes to speed their metabolism, poses an "imminent hazard" to consumers and if so, to immediately ban the sale of the substance. Senator Richard J. Durbin of Illinois told members of the Bush administration during the Senate hearing that its failure to act on the supplement was unacceptable, insisting that action must be taken soon if the government was "serious about protecting the health and well-being" of its citizens.
In a major setback for physicians and public interest groups desperately seeking the ban of ephedra, the Bush administration announced in June that it had ordered a new safety review of the herbal supplement. The decision for the inquiry meant a delay for possible new restrictions on ephedra, angering doctors and other health care officials who have associated the supplement with serious cardiovascular problems.
