Statins May Cause Rare Nerve Disorder

According to a new study published recently in the journal Neurology, cholesterol-lowering medications may cause a rare nerve disorder. The report, authored by a Danish physician and a University of Southern Denmark scientist, indicates that statin use may cause polyneuropathy, a noninflammatory degenerative disease of the nerves. Although researchers warn that the disorder is a rare side effect, experts agree that doctors should be aware of the risk. The article indicates that nerve damage linked to cholesterol-lowering drugs has been reported in over a dozen patients in Denmark since 1999.
