An antiabortion group is asking the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to immediately ban the pregnancy medication Mifeprex, alleging the abortion pill causes adverse events. As part of the petition, Concerned Women for America, the American Association of Pro Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Christian Medical Association alleged abortion-rights interest groups pressured the FDA into approving the medication before it was properly tested. The petition indicates that Mifeprex, also known as RU-486, has been associated with serious bacterial infections, including one fatality, and ectopic pregnancies. The medication also reportedly has the propensity to cause severe bleeding.
