Early Versions of Mobile Phones Linked to Brain Tumors

August 27, 2002

A new study published in the European Journal of Cancer Prevention indicates that users of first-generation mobile phones known as Nordic Mobile Telephone (NMT) analogue units face a greater chance of developing a brain tumor than those who have never used the models. As part of the study, researchers examined 1,617 patients diagnosed with a tumor from 1997 to 2000, determining that the NMT units played a factor in the patients' development of cancer.

According to the report, consumers who used the NMT units for over ten years face an 80% increased risk of developing a tumor. Spokespersons for Nokia, the world's largest mobile phone manufacturer that still markets a NMT version, and Ericsson, which used to make NMT models, say numerous studies have proven that the phones do not present a health risk to consumers.
